Cotton Double Bed Jaipuri Razai Quilt, The craft of quilting in Jaipur is known as RAZAI. RAZAI is similar to a duvet or a bed comforter, and is usually constructed of hand spun and hand woven khadi as the fabric shell, carded cotton for the stuffing, which is also manually carded using a pindar (a bow-like instrument), and hand needle stitching.
Though the origins of Jaipuri RAZAI are unknown, it is thought to be linked to the rigorous vegetarian regulations imposed by the Vishnuism (a Hindu sect that preaches Lord Vishnu presently known as Vaishnav) in the 16th century AD. Leather and wool were banned in certain religious sects in India at the time due to these regulations. The frigid winters in Rajasthan, on the other hand, encouraged people to quilt bedcovers, garments, and other items They used a floor spread and whatever they considered to be a thick surface. As soon as it gained royal sponsorship, this craft improved its aesthetics even more.
Topkhane Ka Rasta, Chaura Rasta, and Chandpole Bzaar Sanganer in Jaipur are examples of the craft. This craft is still conducted in traditional methods in Amer and adopted in Phagi on the outskirts of Jaipur. Because a large portion of this craft is done by women, it is mostly practised in Muslim neighbourhoods.
This craft is practised by the Mansoor group, a Muslim subgroup. Cotton carders are known as Dhunia or Pindara, from the instrument they use to clean and fluff the raw cotton (pindar – bow).
A pindar (bow) was used to fluff the cotton and remove the dross instead of a fluffing machine in the past. It has now been replaced by a carding machine. Aside from manufacturing the classic RAZAI as a night cover, master artists have begun to create new quilting goods. Bags, kurtis, cushion covers, and so on. In recent years, there have been no innovations in the field of tagai. According to the master artisan, the most significant difficulty facing the craft is a lack of workers. The current generation of artisans do not want their children to work in the same field as them.
Jaipuri Razais/Quilts – The world-famous Jaipur Razais, or Quilts, have a long history. The origins of the Jaipur Razai can be traced back to around 280 years ago, when a group of Mansuris (cotton mattress and quilt makers) relocated from Amber to Jaipur. Maharaja Madho Singh ji received a jewel of razai (quilt) from Kadar Bux, a young razai maker, weighing barely a pao (250gms.) of cotton. The Maharaja was so impressed that he bestowed the title of Patel on Kadar Bux and handed him two stores close to Hawa Hahal, opposite the Sawai Man Singh Hall. Today, there are several small shops run by descendants of Kadar Bus that carry on the Rajai-making legacy. The carding (dhunai) of the cotton is the secret of Jaipuri quilts. It’s done by hand to keep the quilts particularly light and cosy. Quilts are divided into three categories: cotton, velvet, and silk, with velvet being the most expensive. The type of cloth and cotton used, as well as the method of carding and stitching, determine the price of a quilt.
